Blue foods that are incredibly good for you

Berries are some of the few natural foods that are blue. The hue comes from anthocyanins, a group of plant compounds that was found to promote heart health and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as cancer and diabetes.

Here are some of the healthiest blue foods you may want to add to your diet.

Blueberries

Sometimes referred to as a superfood, blueberries are high in fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K and are low in calories. They contain high levels of antioxidants, which help protect your body from free radicals that contribute to aging and cancer. It may also be able to lower blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease.

Blackberries

Similar to blueberries, blackberries are high in vitamin C and vitamin K. They also contain high level if manganese, a mineral that is associated to healthy bone and immune system. Eating blackberries may be able to help prevent memory loss from aging and protect you from some types of bacteria that cause oral disease.

Black currants

Black currants contain many vitamins including vitamin A, B-1, B-5, B-6, E and are especially high in vitamin C. The whole plant can be used to help with blood flow, immune system, eye health, kidney health and gut health. The fruit can be eaten fresh, but is often cooked due to it’s tangy flavour. The berry is also available in other forms; black currant seed oil being one of the most common.

Acai berries

Similar in shape and size to blueberries, acai berries are native to Central and South America and are often referred to as a superfood. The reason behind their popularity as a health food comes from their nutritional profile. Acai berries contain higher antioxidant levels than other berries, and contain omega-3 and omega-6 which help prevent high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
