Anti-Acne Diet: A Guide To Clear Skin Eating

Well over 20 and still getting acne? You’re not alone.

 

Adult acne is something that still haunts many of us even after the awkward teenage years. All sorts of things can be the cause of these acne; stress, hormones, the new foundation you just bought, anything. If you’re tired of having to get prescriptions and treatments to deal with your acne, sticking to a diet that helps prevent and treat acne is a great option.

 

Here are some of the tips for clear skin eating.

 

Stay hydrated

Drink water, simple right? Your organs don’t function as well when your body is dehydrated, and your skin is the biggest organ you have. By drinking sufficient amount of water, you give your body a good detox; water flushes out the toxins in your liver, kidney, and within your skin that can lead to acne. Aim for 8 glasses of water per day for a healthy and clear skin.

 

Fight your sugar cravings

Sugar is the enemy for your skin and our typical modern diet is loaded with it. Sugary foods not only include your favourite desserts and candy aisle sweets; foods that produce simple sugar such as pasta, white bread and white rice all increase your risk of acne. For clearer skin, avoid sugary foods and try limiting your sugar intake to fructose found in fruits.

 

Cut back on alcohol  

Alcohol doesn’t directly cause acne but it can affect the bodily functions that influence its development, such as your immune system and hormone levels. Alcohol also dehydrates your skin, increases inflammation and gives your liver more toxins to remove. Drink in moderation if you are looking to improve your skin condition and don’t forget to drink lots of water to minimize its effect.

 

Eat more skin-friendly food

Low glycemic-foods and foods containing zinc, vitamin A, E and antioxidants are found to reduce the risk of acne and inflammation. Some skin-friendly foods to consider adding to your diet include:

  • whole-wheat bread

  • brown rice

  • yellow and orange vegetables such as sweet potatoes and carrots

  • fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel

  • beans, peas and nuts

  • green leafy vegetables

  • anti-oxidant rich berries
